Franz-Josefs-Höhe with the huge car park and the funicular which looks like a railway model between stones!

Franz-Josefs-Höhe is also the starting point for the hiking climbs up to the Grossglockner. To reach the Grossglockner, which is on the other side of the glacier of Pasterze, the alpinists have to go down and cross the glacier before reaching the bottom of the highest peak of Austria.
Today the glacier of Pasterze is 9 kilometers long but it lost 1 kilometer length and 100 meters high during the last 125 years!
In 1963 a funicular was built to make the accesse to the glacier easier for the visitors.
When the funicular was built the surface of the glacier was reaching the bottom station. Today the funicular is not long enough to reach the ice!

Franz-Josefs-Höhe est aussi le point de départ des courses pour l'ascension du Grossglockner. Pour atteindre les pentes du sommet, qui est sur l'autre flanc de la vallée, les alpinistes doivent descendre en direction du glacier et le traverser avant d'atteindre le pied du plus haut sommet d'Autriche.
Aujourd'hui la glacier du Pasterze ne fait plus que 9 kilomètres de long. Il a perdu environ un kilomètre de longueur depuis 125 ans!
En 1963 un funiculaire fut construit pour faciliter l'accès du glacier aux nombreux touristes.
Quand le funiculaire fut construit, le niveau de la glace du glacier arrivait jusqu'à la gare inférieure du funiculaire. Aujourd'hui le funiculaire n'est plus assez long pour atteindre le glacier!
