Although the citizens of Zagreb resisted the idea the construction
started in 1888. D. W. Klein got into some financial difficulties and
passes the concession to the builder Ganz and Co. from Budapest. Ganz
established a firm under the name of Dionicko drustvo zagrebacke uspinjace
(Zagreb Funicular Ltd.). The opening ceremony took place on the 6th of
May 1889. The funicular did not make much profit and it was taken over
by Hrvatska sveopca kreditna banka (Croatian General Credit Bank) from
Zagreb. The concession was originally granted to Klein for 40 years (until
1928.) and after that time the City of Zagreb took over the funicular.
It was incorporated in Zagrebacki elektricni tramvaj (Zagreb Electrical
tram) company. 1934. ZET replaced its steam engine with an electrical
one. |
