Funicular Santa Cova
The funicular of Santa Cova was built in 1929 to make easier the access to the stations of the Cross, and the Santa Cova chapel, which are at a lower level than the Monastery. The main characteristic of this funicular is the shape of the two wooden cabins which are composed of 5 compartments with 5 roofs arranged as stairs. The compartments, at each end of the cabins, contain a small separated area for the conductor. |
The top station of the funicular
Santa Cova. Above the building you can make out the top station of the funicular Sant Joan at the top of the gorge between the rocks. |
The track of this funicular is curved on most of the length of the line. |
One cabin in the bottom station near the beginning
of the stations of the Cross.

The engine room in the top station. As for the funicular Sant Joan, the machinery is unchanged since the the first use. |

Note the funny 'box' for the conductor inside the first
compartment of the cabin.
